The association of lipoprotein (a) and acute ischemic stroke cases admitted in tertiary care center

Abstract
Background: Lipoprotein (a) (Lp[a]) is a thrombogenic and atherogenic molecule. Several studies have shown Lp(a) as an independent risk factor for stroke. The casecontrol study was done in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

Aims and Objectives: To estimate the levels of serum lipoprotein (a) in patients with acute ischemic stroke and the association.

Materials and Methods: Lp(a) was quantified by immunoturbidimetric method and lipid profile by enzymatic method.

Results: The serum Lp(a) levels were significantly elevated (P < 0.001) in cases (62.5 ± 18.3 mg/dl) as compared to controls (21.7 ± 7.1 mg/dl).

Conclusion: Elevated Lp(a) is a risk factor for stroke and might play an important role in the genesis of cerebrovascular thrombosis. It may be appropriate to assess Lp(a) levels in Indians along with routine lipid profile testing in subjects with other risk factors.
