Study of anthropometric measurements and lipid profile in regular exercisers

Swati Trimbak Jangam, Chetana Singode, Sanjeev Charlingayya Tadasadmath.

Abstract
Introduction: Anthropometric measurements are simple, easy, cheap, and feasible methods used to estimate body fat. Regular exercise is very important for healthy life. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis. This study was aimed to correlate anthropometric parameters with lipid profile in healthy females performing regular exercise.

Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to study correlation of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist hip ratio (WHC) with lipid profile in females performing regular exercise.

Materials and Methods: BMI, WC, hip circumference, and WHC measured using standard protocol. 2 mL blood sample collected after overnight fasting. ipid profile study for total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and very low-density lipoproteins was done using fully automated biochemical analyzer. Pearson’s correlation and Chi-square test used for statistical analysis.

Results: BMI and WC showed statistically significant positive correlation with TC and LDL. WHR showed highly significant positive correlation with TC and LDL.

Conclusion: BMI, WC, and WHR are showing significant positive correlation with TC and LDL. This underlies significance of regular exercise to maintain lipid profile in control range for good health.

Key words: Body Mass Index; Waist Circumference; Waist Hip Ratio; Total Cholesterol; High-Density Lipoproteins; Very Low-density Lipoproteins; Low-Density Lipoproteins
