Pattern of drug use and their safety profile in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the major causes of death around the world. Early initiation of treatment can reduce disease progression and mortality. COPD cannot be treated with monotherapy and requires multidrug therapy. The present study planned to evaluate the drug utilization pattern in the COPD patients.

Aim and Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the common drug used in COPD patients. Second objective is to evaluate the safety of drugs.

Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology, Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences during the period of January 2017–2018. According to study protocol, a total of 150 patients were included in the study. All the patient demographic, clinical, and medication details were collected and analyzed.

Results: Totally 150 COPD patients were analyzed. Among 85 were male and 65 were female. The mean age of the study population is 58.28. 4.33 is the average number of drugs prescribed per patient in that beta-2 agonists are most common compared to other drugs. Patients are developed adverse drug reaction that was analyzed with WHO causality assessment.

Conclusion: The study results concluded that most of the patients were taking beta-2 agonists.
