Students’ perceptions about learning pharmacology at a single private institute in Shimoga

Abstract
Background: Pharmacology is one of the major paraclinical subjects for medical students to become good medical practitioners in future. The knowledge of pharmacology plays a crucial role in the clinical practice of all specialties. There are various teaching learning methodologies available to make students understand the concept as well as to memorize the various drugs available to treat different ailments.

Aim and Objective: This study aims (i) to understand the current perceptions of medical students regarding learning and understanding pharmacology and (ii) perception of students regarding role of pharmacology in both clinical practice and research.

Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in a private medical college in South India. One hundred and one medical students studying in the fifth term were included in the study and the standard questionnaire was given and responses were collected and compiled.

Results: The majority of the students (81.2%) felt pharmacology as interesting subject a well as important subject in UG curriculum. Moreover, 92.1% felt that proper understanding of pharmacology will make them good clinician.

Conclusions: Students perceive that the pharmacology is an interesting subject which helps them to become a good clinician. The teaching and assessment modalities need minor changes which will facilitate in the understanding of the subject in a better way.
