Diabetes distress and disease-related factors in patients with type 2 diabetes attending a tertiary care hospital

Abstract
Background: Diabetes poses a significant burden on individuals, families, and society. Diabetes-related distress, a condition where the patients are concerned with the management of their diseases, getting the support they needed, its emotional burden as well as access to needed care.

Aim and Objective: This study was done to assess the diabetic distress (DD) among Type 2 diabetic patients.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 140 diabetic patients aged 18 years and above attending medicine OPD. They were assessed using DSS17 scale. Convenience sampling was used for sample size calculation and descriptive statistics.

Results: One hundred and forty Type 2 diabetic patients consisting of 82 males and 58 females were included in the study. Among 140 patients, 82 (58.57%) had DD. Female, younger patients <50 years, patients with comorbidities, and not literate experienced more DD. Furthermore, as the duration of diabetes increases more than 10 years, the distress level reduced from 60.9% to 33.3%. Regimen distress was most common distress. Among regimen-related severe problem, not testing blood sugars at right time and failing with diabetes regimen were more.

Conclusion: Understanding each patientÂ’s diabetes-related distress and counseling should be given prime importance along with the prescription of drugs by the treating physician during each visit.
